Crossroads Church opened the Coffee Shop in December 2000 and enjoyed serving the community with good, home-made food in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
While open as a Coffee Shop, staff donated their tips to charity. Fundraising events were also held to raise money for charity. The following charities were supported over the years;
RNLI Newbiggin
Farm Africa
St Oswald's Hospice
Toby Henderson Trust
Great North Air Ambulance
PPUK (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research)
In 2006, we co-sponsored the training of a guide dog for the blind puppy, called Winston.
Sadly, the decline in footfall - not helped by the coronavirus pandemic - meant that we began to lose money on a weekly basis. The difficult decision was taken to cease trading as a coffee shop and our final day of business was on 26th November 2022.
However, from 6th December 2022 - and as part of the Northumberland Warm Spaces initiative - we opened as a warm hub on Tuesdays and Fridays. We began by serving soup and scones, free to those struggling with the increased cost of living. We now serve soup, hot meals, puddings and desserts.
We are always on the lookout for volunteers to help us maintain this service to the people of Ashington and the surrounding areas. Please use the contact details on our home page if you are interested in doing this.
